Tip of the Week: How to Defend Your Network from 3 Top-Tier Disasters

b2ap3_thumbnail_protect_your_network_400.jpgYour company’s network can be very sensitive at times, and even the slightest disruption can cause downtime. Be it an immense natural disaster or something as simple as forgetting your login credentials, it’s common problems which cause the most trouble for businesses. In order to fight against these issues, it’s best to prepare yourself for these three common (and fairly simple) scenarios.

Power Outages
Constantly being connected to electricity has spoiled the human race to the point where we have no clue what to do in the event of a power outage. This can happen when you least expect it, but it’s more likely that you’ve lost power due to overloading an outlet than due to a lightning storm. An offline system can put an abrupt end to the productivity of an entire company. A sudden power outage can put a damper on anyone’s day, especially if there is unsaved data or hardware damage involved.

Thankfully, Directive has your back in such an event. Our Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR) solution can help protect your business against these minor setbacks. In the event you lose power, overloaded outlet or otherwise, the BDR can act as a backup for all of your network’s data, sending it to the cloud for later recovery. One other method you can try is using an Uninterruptible Power Supply, or a UPS. This piece of hardware continues to run during a brief outage, allowing your team to save their work, at the very least.

Natural (or Not-So-Natural) Disasters
When a real disaster strikes, like a flood or a fire, it’s important that your team has a rehearsed evacuation plan in place. This should include assigning designated leaders to ensure the safety of your team when it’s needed most. In this case, it’s also important to keep in mind what kind of data backup you’re running. If you’re still running tape drives, you should assign someone to take them off-site for safe keeping. Otherwise, the BDR is the better solution in emergency scenarios. With BDR, there’s no worrying about what is happening to your data post-disaster. You can know that it’s tucked away safe and sound in the cloud.

What’s My Password Again?
You’ve surely felt the strain of trying to remember a forgotten password, and even if you haven’t, you might know the pains of not knowing the password at all. For example, you may have encountered an issue when your IT technician has the day off and it’s an emergency, yet they’re the only one who knows the password. This could have been avoided if the technician made the password more accessible to the company.

There are multiple solutions to this issue, but a password storage service might be the best way to make sure your passwords are easily accessible to any who needs them. Directive can help your business put these password solutions into place, and we can even monitor your network to aid you with any failed login attempts.
