New York Will Soon Be The First State With Complete High-Speed Broadband Access

Doing business in this day and age depends more and more on your ability to connect to the Internet. It is also essential that your connectivity speeds are able to keep up with your business needs. For many operating in New York State, this has been a problem, but no longer.

Governor Andrew Cuomo enacted a program to ensure that every New Yorker will at least be able to access high-speed broadband Internet by 2018, a move that is unprecedented in the United States. The $500 million dollar project is meant to provide the entire state with access to Internet connectivity, a service that the New York State website refers to as both a utility and a necessity.

These improvements are poised to provide businesses with the increased ability to embrace new solutions, enabling them to attain higher levels of success and productivity. Furthermore, this increase in broadband capability could lead to an increase in potential clients visiting local business websites, as using the Internet will be much faster and much less stressful.

First announced on March 1, 2016, the NYS Broadband Program is meant to allow all New York businesses and residents the ability to keep pace with the demands of the rest of the modernized world, thereby remaining competitive in an increasingly globalized market. The theory is that, along with the merger between Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications to form Spectrum, the New NY Broadband Program will increase the availability of broadband connection speeds for millions of state residents and business owners.

The program intends to provide broadband speeds of at least 25 Mbps (megabits per second) in the state’s more remote regions, with the goal being 100 Mbps, generally. For reference, these kinds of speeds are capable of instantly loading web pages and supporting multiple devices during considerable use.

Since the program was announced, grants have been awarded to regions all across the state to assist them in making the necessary infrastructural changes the broadband update will require. As for the Southern Tier, $38.8 million has been awarded in such grants. Clearly, when you consider the investment that is being made into the NYS Broadband Program, the state government is serious about making statewide, high-speed broadband a reality.
